Dental disease can be a serious problem for both dogs and cats. Aside from causing bad breath which is unpleasant for both the pet and owner, It is often painful, and can result in serious systemic disease.
Good oral hygiene is part of your pet's routine home care. Regular tooth brushings, as well as an appropriate diet will be among the most important things that you can do to help prevent dental disease.
Our technicians can explain and show you how to properly care for your pet's teeth.
When necessary, we may prescribe a professional dental cleaning. This will include the removal of harmful tartar and calculus, followed by polishing. We will often apply a sealant for protection and to help protect the teeth from rapid tartar accumulation.
In severe cases, where the mouth is infected, teeth are decayed, and the patient is painful, we will need to extract teeth. All of this will be discussed with you before any decision is made.
Professional dental cleanings require anesthesia. We recommend preanesthetic blood work and intravenous fluids for our dental patients, especially those that are elderly.
Just as with any other patient undergoing anesthesia, pets are monitored throughout the procedure by a trained technician.
